Part Two (5/5)

 

Fletcher Lynd Seagull was still quite young, but already he knew

that no bird had ever been so harshly treated by any Flock,

or with so much injustice.

 

플레쳐 린드는 아직 매우 젊은 갈매기였다.
그러나 그는 그 어느 누구도 자기만큼 가혹한 취급을 받거나,

불공평하게 대우받은 갈매기는 없을 것이라고 생각했다.

 

"I don't care what they say," he thought fiercely,

and his vision blurred as he flew out toward the Far Cliffs.

"There's so much more to flying

than just flapping around from place to place!

A... a... mosquito does that!

One little barrel roll around the Elder Gull, just for fun, and I'm Outcast!

Are they blind? Can't they see?

Can't they think of the glory that it'll be when we really learn to fly?

 

"그들이 뭐라고 말하든 나는 상관없어" 그는 흥분해서 그렇게 생각했다.
그리고 그가 먼 벼랑 쪽을 향해 날아가자 그의 시야가 흐려져 왔다.
"난다는 것은 한 장소에서 다른 장소로 아래위로 오르내리는 것만을 의미하지 않아!

그런 정도라면 모기도 그렇게 할 수 있어!

내가 재미로 나이든 갈매기 주위를 옆으로 한 번 비행했다고 나를 추방하다니!

그들은 눈이 멀었을까? 그들은 볼 수도 없는가?

우리가 진정으로 나는 법을 터득하게 되면

얻게되는 큰 기쁨이 어떤 것인지 전혀 생각해 보지도 않았단 말인가?"

 

"I don't care what they think.

I'll show them what flying is! I'll be pure Outlaw,

if that's the way they want it. And I'll make them so sorry..."

"그들이 나를 어떻게 생각하든 상관없어.
나는 그들에게 나는 것은 어떤 것인지를 보여줄 거야!
그들이 그렇게 되기를 바란다면 진짜 무법자가 될 거야!
그래서 그들이 실컷 후회하도록 만들거야."

 

The voice came inside his own head,

and though it was very gentle,

it startled him so much that he faltered and stumbled in the air.

"Don't be harsh on them, Fletcher Seagull.

In casting you out, the other gulls have only hurt themselves,

and one day they will know this,

and one day they will see what you see.

Forgive them, and help them to understand."

 

그때 그의 머리 속으로 어떤 목소리가 들려 왔다.

그리고 비록 그것이 아주 온화한 목소리였지만,

그는 그 목소리에 너무나 놀라서 멈칫거리다가 공중에서 비틀거리며 날았다.
"그들에게 너무 가혹하게 대하지 말아라, 플레쳐.

사실 알고 보면 너를 추방한 그 갈매기들은

도리어 자기 스스로에게 상처를 입혔을 뿐이란다.

그리고 언젠가 그들도 그런 사실을 알게 되고,

네가 깨달은 것들을 그들도 깨닫게 될 것이란다.

그러니 그들을 용서하고, 그들이 이해할 수 있도록 도와주도록 하게."

 

An inch from his right wingtip

flew the most brilliant white gull in all the world,

gliding effortlessly along, not moving a feather,

at what was very nearly Fletcher's top speed.

 

플레쳐의 오른쪽 날개 끝으로부터 일 인치쯤 떨어진 곳에

이 세상의 그 어떤 갈매기보다도 희게 빛나는 갈매기가 날고 있었는데,

그 갈매기는 거의 플레쳐의 최고 속도에 가까운 속도로 날고있으면서도

깃털 하나 움직이지 않은 채 힘들이지 않고 미끄러지듯 날고 있었다.

 

There was a moment of chaos in the young bird.

"What's going on? Am I mad? Am I dead? What is this?"

Low and calm, the voice went on within his thought,

demanding an answer.

"Fletcher Lynd Seagull, do you want to fly?"

"YES, I WANT TO FLY!".

 

그 순간 젊은 갈매기의 마음은 혼란에 빠져버렸다.
"어찌된 일이지? 내가 미쳐버렸을까? 아니면 내가 죽은게 아닐까?

대체 이게 무슨 일일까?"
그러자 낮고 조용한 목소리가 계속 그의 마음을 울리며 대답을 바라고 있었다.
"플레쳐, 자넨 정말로 날기를 원하나?"
"네, 저는 날고 싶어요!"

 

"Fletcher Lynd Seagull,

do you want to fly so much that you will forgive the Flock,

and learn, and go back to them one day and work to help them know?"

There was no lying to this magnificent skillful being,

no matter how proud or how hurt a bird was Fletcher Seagull.
"I do," he said softly.

"Then, Fletch," that bright creature said to him,

and the voice was very kind,

"let's begin with Level Flight...."

 

"플레쳐, 네가 그렇게 날기를 원한다면, 너는 그 갈매기들을 용서해야하고,

많은 것을 배워서 어느 날 다시 그들에게 돌아가

그들이 정말로 나는 것이 무엇인지를 알도록 도와주어야 한단다.

그렇게 할 수 있겠나?"
플레처가 제아무리 자존심이 강하고 상처를 많이 받았던 갈매기라고 할지라도,

이렇게 멋지고 숙련된 솜씨를 가진 존재에 대해서는

자신의 본심을 털어놓지 않을 수 없었다.
그는 순순히 대답했다. "네 그렇게 하겠습니다" 
"그렇다면, 플레쳐"
그러자 그 빛나는 존재는 그에게 아주 친밀한 목소리로 말했다.
"자 그럼..수평 비행부터 시작하기로 하지..."
