Part Two (3/5)

 

Utterly unimpressed with the strange surroundings,

the Elder brushed the question aside.

"We're on some planet, obviously,

with a green sky and a double star for a sun."

Jonathan made a scree of delight,

the first sound he had made since he had left Earth.

"IT WORKS!" "Well, of course, it works, Jon." said Chiang.

"It always works, when you know what you're doing.

Now about your control..."

 

주변의 낯선 풍경에는 전혀 관심도 나타내지 않고,
나이든 갈매기는 그의 질문을 간단히 받아넘겼다.
"우리는 분명히 초록빛 하늘과

쌍둥이 별로 된 태양이 있는 어떤 혹성에 온 것이라네"
조나단은 기쁨에 들떠 환성을 질렀다.
"해 냈다!"
그가 지상을 떠나온 이래 처음 지른 소리였다.
"그럼, 물론이지. 조나단 자네는 해낸거야." 치앙이 말했다.
"자신이 무엇을 하고 있는지 알고 있을 때에는 언제든 해낼 수 있는 것일세.
자, 이제는 자네의 제구력에 대해서...."

 

By the time they returned, it was dark.

The other gulls looked at Jonathan with awe in their golden eyes,

for they had seen him disappear from

where he had been rooted for so long.

He stood their congratulations for less than a minute.

"I'm the newcomer here! I'm just beginning!

It is I who must learn from you!"

 

그들이 돌아왔을 때는 이미 어두워진 뒤였다.
다른 갈매기들은 그들의 황금빛 눈에

두려움과 존경의 눈빛을 띠고 조나단을 바라보았다.
왜냐하면 그들은 조나단이 그렇게 오래 뿌리박힌 듯

서있던 곳으로부터 사라지는 것을 보았기 때문이었다.

그는 동료들이 건네는 축하의 말에 매우 수줍어했다.
"저는 여기에 갓 들어온 풋내기예요. 이제 겨우 시작일 뿐일걸요.

저야말로 여러분들한테 배워야 해요."

 

"I wonder about that, Jon," said Sullivan standing near.

"You have less fear of learning than any gull

I've seen in ten thousand years."

 The Flock fell silent, and Jonathan fidgeted in embarrassment.

"We can start working with time if you wish," Chiang said,

"till you can fly the past and the future.

And then you will be ready to begin the most difficult,

the most powerful, the most fun of all.

You will be ready to begin to fly up

and know the meaning of kindness and of love."

 

"꼭 그렇지만은 않아, 죤"하고 옆에 있던 설리반이 말했다.
"나는 지난 1만 년 동안 자네처럼 배우기를 두려워하지 않는
갈매기를 한 번도 본 적이 없어."
갈매기들은 조용해졌고, 조나단은 당황해서 안절부절못했다.
"자네가 원한다면 시간에 대한 연구를 시작해도 좋겠지"
치앙이 말했다.
"자네가 과거와 미래를 모두 날을 수 있을 때까지 말일세.

그러면 자네는 가장 어렵고, 가장 강력하고,

무엇보다도 가장 재미있는 일을 시작할 준비를 마칠 수 있게 되는 거야.

다시말해 자네는 더 높이 날아올라

친절과 사랑의 진정한 의미를 알 수 있게 되는 것이지."

 

A month went by, or something that felt about like a month,

and Jonathan learned at a tremendous rate.

He always had learned quickly from ordinary experience,

and now, the special student of the Elder Himself,

he took in new ideas like a streamlined feathered computer.

 

그리고 나서 한 달이 지났다.

아니, 어쩌면 한 달쯤 되었다고 느껴졌을 뿐인지도 모른다.
조나단은 무서운 속도로 배워 나갔다.

그는 언제나 사소한 일상의 경험으로부터 재빨리 배워왔고,

이제 그 나이든 갈매기로부터 특별 지도를 받고 나서부터는

마치 깃이 달린 유선형 컴퓨터처럼 새로운 생각들을 흡수해 나갔다.

 

But then the day came that Chiang vanished.

He had been talking quietly with them all,

exhorting them never to stop their learning

and their practicing and their striving

to understand more of the perfect invisible principle of all life.

Then, as he spoke, his feathers went brighter and brighter

and at last turned so brilliant that no gull could look upon him.

 

그러나 치앙이 사라지는 그 날이 왔다.

그는 모든 갈매기에게 조용한 음성으로 이야기하면서,

삶의 배후에 있는 보이지 않는 완전한 원리를 이해하기 위해

노력하는 그들의 배움과 실천을

결코 중단해서는 안된다고 간곡하게 부탁하고 있었다.
그렇게 그가 이야기하고 있는 동안에

그의 깃이 점점 더 빛나기 시작하더니,

마침내 아무도 그를 바로 바라볼 수 없을 만큼 눈부시게 되어 갔다.

 

"Jonathan," he said, and these were the last words that he spoke,

"keep working on love."

When they could see again, Chiang was gone.

 

"조나단"하고 그는 말했다.
이것이 그가 한 마지막 말이었다.
"끓임없이 사랑을 실천하게."
그들이 다시 볼 수 있게 되었을 때, 치앙은 이미 사라지고 없었다.
