South Korean soccer fans unite in Carrollton

for World Cup watch party

 

Joy Han of Coppell handed her extra set of noisemakers to fellow South Korean soccer fan Ann Lee, a Carrollton high school student.
The sea of red-shirted Dallas-area South Koreans rose and fell like tidal waves Saturday in Carrollton's Sahn Restaurant & Indoor Screen Golf. About 200 fans filled the entire second floor, spilling onto the staircase and beyond, to witness South Korea's round of 16 World Cup match against Uruguay in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Though they didn't satisfy Han, thunderous cheers filled the two-story structure each time South Korea got the ball.
"Steal it, steal it!" Han yelled between incessant banging of noisemakers. "They're coming again! They're coming again!"
Each tiny moment carried so much potential and possibility for the optimistic crowd as it followed the team's every kick, dribble and tackle from thousands of miles away, hoping to will the ball into Uruguay's net.
"There's something called telepathy," said Choong Lee, the restaurant's director of operations. "We can boost them to play better."
Although South Korea lost 2-1, knocking the team out of the competition, Lee said he believed the restaurant patrons' unified cheers helped the team.
South Korea is recognized as having Asia's most successful soccer program, qualifying for seven consecutive World Cups.
But its fans have seen more heartaching defeats than victories. The country made its World Cup debut in 1954 but didn't win its first match until 2002, as one of the host teams. The team shattered expectations by finishing fourth that year.
Ann Lee, a senior at R.L. Turner High School who visited South Korea that summer, remembers what it was like.
"The atmosphere in Korea is insane," she said. "People go all-out."
For Gloria Choi of Carrollton, Saturday's watch party was a chance to expose her young son to cultural unity and pride by connecting him more to the Korean community.
"It's exciting," she said of South Korea's performance. "The missed chances are disappointing, but I'm proud of our team."
Barry Collins of Carrollton, who attended the party with his Korean wife, Chu, compared Koreans' enthusiasm for the World Cup to Americans' fanaticism for the Super Bowl.
"Koreans are really into it," he said.
Despite the loss, Choong Lee of Allen said he believes South Korea has shed its underdog reputation.
"Korean soccer is a formidable opponent," he said. "From now on, we'll get all the respect we deserve."

코펠에 사는 조이 한 양은 한국 축구팬인 캐롤턴 고등학교 앤 리 양에게

자신이 가지고 있는 여분의 응원도구 세트를 넘겨주었다.

“응원하자”며 조이 양은 절박하게 말했다. “우리가 더 응원해야 돼.”

달라스 지역 한인들의 붉은 셔츠의 바다는 토요일 캐롤톤에 소재한 ‘산’ 레스토랑과

실내 스크린 골프장 안에서 파도처럼 일어났다가 떨어졌다.

약 200여명의 팬들은 16강 진출을 위해 남아프리카공화국의 포트 엘리자베스에서 열리고 있는

한국 대 우라과이와의 접전을 관람하기 위해 2층 홀과 층계 그리고 그 넘어까지 가득 메웠다.

비록 응원이 조이 양을 만족시키지는 못했지만 한국 팀이 매번 골을 잡을 때마다

천둥같은 환호소리가 2층 건물을 가득 채웠다.

“공을 뺏어”라며 조이 양은 끊임없는 응원도구 사이로 소리질렀다.

“우루과이가 다시 공격해오고 있어!” 찰나 같은 순간도 한국팀의 모든 킥과 드리블

그리고 태클을 함께 하고 우루과이 골대로 골이 들어가기를 소망하는 수천마일이나 떨어져 있는

낙관적인 청중들에게는 무한한 가능성과 잠재력을 가지고 있었다.

“이 응원은 텔레파시 같은 것”이라고 말한 ‘산’ 레스토랑의 매니저 충 리 씨는

“우리가 한국팀이 경기를 잘 하도록 후원하고 있다”고 말했다.

비록 한국 팀이 경쟁에서 2 대 1로 졌지만, 이 씨는 레스토랑의 고객들과 하나된 응원이

한국팀을 도왔다는 것을 믿는다고 전했다.

한국 축구는 연속 7번 월드컵 본선에 진출 할만한 아시아의 가장 성공적인

축구 프로그램을 가진 팀으로 알려져있다.

그러나 한국 축구 팬들은 승리보다 더 많은 가슴 아픈 패배를 보아야 했다.

한국은 1954년에 월드컵 본선에 데뷔했으나 이후 월드컵 개최국이었던 2002년까지

한 게임도 이겨본 적이 없다. 한국팀은 그 해 4강으로 마무리하며 예상을 뒤엎었다.

2002년 여름에 한국을 방문했던 적이 있는 R.L 터너 고등학교 3학년인 앤 리 양은 그 때를 이렇게 기억한다.
“한국의 분위기는 미친 것 같았어요”라는 앤 양은 “사람들은 전력을 다했어요”라고 전했다.

캐롤턴에 거주하는 글로리아 최 씨에게 토요일 응원전은 자신의 어린 아들이 좀 더 한국

커뮤니티와 연결됨으로 문화적인 유대감과 자부심에 노출될 수 있는 기회였다.
“흥미진진했어요”라는 최 씨는 한국팀의 경기에 대해 이렇게 말했다.

 

“놓친 기회는 아깝지만 저는 한국 팀이 자랑스러워요.”

캐롤턴에 거주하는 배리 콜린스 씨는 자신의 한국인 아내 Chu씨와 함께 이 응원전에 참여했다.

콜린스 씨는 한국 사람의 월드컵에 대한 열정과 미국의 슈퍼 볼에 대한 열정과 비교했다.

“한국 사람들은 축구를 정말 좋아한다”고 그는 말했다.

이번 우루과이와의 경기에서 한국팀이 졌지만 알랜에 거주하는 충 리  씨는

이번 경기로 한국 축구팀이 약체라는 오명을 씻어버렸음을 믿는다고 전했다.

“한국 축구는 가공할만한 상대다”라며 이 씨는

“이제부터, 우리는 우리가 받아야 마땅한 평가를 받을 것이다”라고 말했다.
